The Riverside – West End Historic District is located on the Upper West Side between 85th and 95th streets in the blocks around Riverside Drive and West End Avenue. The district developed as a residential area between 1884 and 1939, before which it had been largely undeveloped. Mansions occupied the most well-sited lots along Riverside Drive, overlooking the Hudson River, while the side streets were filled with row houses and apartment buildings. Many of these mansions and row houses were replaced by high-end apartment houses in the early 20th century, as rising land prices made apartment living more acceptable. The apartment houses present two groups of unified design, depending on the date of construction and governing zoning at the time. The district also includes a number of dignified houses of worship.
