Operations Overview

The Trust for Architectural Easements® is one of the largest preservation easement holding organization in the nation. The Trust raises awareness about the need for historic preservation by providing grants to preservation organizations and community groups. And, through education initiatives directed at all ages, fosters greater appreciation for the historic structures that contribute to the beauty of our cities and towns.

Position Summary

The individual in this position must demonstrate strong communication and organization skills. S/he maintains hardcopy and softcopy files, prepares correspondence and answers phone inquiries. S/he performs basic administrative functions such as reviewing documentation for completeness, entering data into the online tracking system, and communicating with donors, property owners, and their representatives. S/he assists with initial reviews of owner requests to alter properties encumbered by easements in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards.

S/he will assist with the annual monitoring of 800+ properties, primarily along the eastern seaboard north of Washington, which includes scheduling and conducting inspections, requiring occasional overnight travel. S/he writes and edits online newsletters on relevant historic preservation and architectural history topics for the Trust’s website. The individual in this position is a member of a team and reports to the Director of Stewardship.

 Position Accountabilities

1. Assists with Annual Monitoring program, including scheduling and conducting appointments, preparing correspondence with donors and property owners/representatives, and performing property comparisons.

2. Executes current policies and procedures in compliance with existing laws and regulations, and

understands and adheres to internal controls.

3. Communicates (by letter, electronically, and orally) timely and effectively with property owners, and external contacts, as necessary.

4. Understand change request process, including ability to explain process to property owners and representatives, conduct initial reviews of change requests based on the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards.

5. Assist updating property files and owner records in both hard and soft copy.

6. Executes projects of appropriate complexity within time and/or other constraints.

7. Understands and effectively uses the easement tracking system.

8. Writes and edits online historic preservation and architectural history newsletters.

9. Possesses familiarity with Adobe Design Suite, including InDesign and Photoshop.

Education, Experience and Technical Skills

Degree in architectural history, historic preservation, or equivalent experience. Two to three years of successful experience in historic preservation work. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Familiarity with preservation easements and the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards. Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Design Suite, data entry, and ability to understand and execute processes in online tracking software. Ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
